Artists of Studio 2000

Jaap Min

Jaap Min (1914–1987) occupies a distinctive position within Dutch art history as a representative of the second generation of the Bergen School. This group of artists, which emerged in the North Holland village of Bergen in the early twentieth century, was characterized by an expressionist visual language, a dark tonal palette, and a strong emphasis on inner experience. Whereas the first generation—featuring artists such as Leo Gestel and Charley Toorop—experimented extensively with influences from Cubism and Luminism, Min developed a more subdued and restrained approach.

Min studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he encountered both the academic tradition and the modernist innovations of his time. His early work still reveals clear traces of Expressionism, with a pronounced brushstroke and relatively heavy use of color. However, his focus soon shifted toward a greater reduction of form and a more contemplative mode of painting.

A defining characteristic of Jaap Min’s oeuvre is its emphasis on structure and composition. His landscapes, still lifes, and figure pieces are constructed from simplified, often monumental forms, with superfluous details deliberately omitted. His palette remains generally subdued and earthy, contributing to the closed, introspective atmosphere of his work. In contrast to the dramatic expressiveness of some of his contemporaries, Min sought a sense of inner calm and balance.

Within the context of the Bergen School, Min can be seen as an artist who distilled the expressionist legacy to its essence.
