Nicolaas van der Waay saw his dream of winning the Prix du Rome in 1883 go up in smoke: there were no other candidates! However, thanks to the intercession of his then professor, August Allebé, he was awarded a ministerial grant of ƒ 1000 for a study trip to Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice).
